The Issuance of "Songket - The Regal Heritage" Commemorative Coins

Bank Negara Malaysia is issuing three types of commemorative coins to commemorate "Songket - The Regal Heritage" as inspired by the promotional works started by the late Datin Paduka Seri Endon Mahmood. These commemorative coins are launched on 14 February 2006 by the Prime Minister, Y.A.B. Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at Sri Pentas Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Berhad (TV3). The commemorative coins are legal tender and the specifications are as follows:

  1. Gold Commemorative Coins (proof)
    This proof coin is made of gold with 999.9 purity and weighs 8.6 grams. It has a face value of RM100 and will be sold at RM1,028 per piece. The mintage quantity is limited to 150 pieces only.


  2. Silver Commemorative Coin (proof)
    This proof coin, with a face value of RM10 is made of silver with 925 purity and weighs 21.7 grams. It is priced at RM138 per piece. The mintage quantity is limited to 200 pieces only.


  3. Bi-Metal Commemorative Coin (brilliant uncirculated)
    The bi-metal coin has a face value of RM1 and is sold at RM8 each. Mintage quantity is 20,000 pieces.

The coins are also available in a set of 3 and and a set of 2. The set of 3 consists of gold, silver and bi-metal proof coins. The set of 2 consists of silver and bi-metal proof coins. Both sets will be sold at RM1,268 and RM188 respectively. Detailed specifications of the coins are as per Attachment I .

Coin Design

The same design is used for all three types of the commemorative coins. The Songket coins will have a common obverse design which depicts Songket pattern with the words "Songket Seni Warisan Agung" and "Songket The Regal Heritage". The reverse side of the coin features the face value and one of the three most popular motifs which are commonly used on Songket. The gold coin depicts the Tampuk Kesemak motif while the silver coin depicts the Bunga Bintang motif, and the bi-metal coin depicts the Bunga Ketola motif.

These commemorative coins are minted and distributed by The Royal Mint of Malaysia and will be available for sale from 8 March 2006 at the following outlets:
