MUFG Bank (Malaysia) Berhad
The MUFG Bank (Malaysia) Berhad was set up as The Bank of Tokyo, Ltd. as representative office in the then Malaya in October 1957 and subsequently obtained its banking license in June 1959, making it the first Japanese bank to provide a full range of banking services. On June 1, 1994, Bank of Tokyo (Malaysia) Berhad was locally incorporated and became a fully owned subsidiary of its Parent Bank in Tokyo. MUFG went through several successive mergers, including merger between Bank of Tokyo and Mitsubishi Bank in 1996, between Sanwa Bank, Tokai Bank and Toyo Trust and Banking in 2000–2002, and between the two resulting entities in 2005.
In 2006, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi (Malaysia) Berhad was renamed to Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ (Malaysia) Berhad (“BTMU (M)”), following another merger of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Ltd and UFJ Bank, marking the birth of the largest bank in the world in terms of total assets.
Starting 2018, the Bank is known as MUFG Bank (Malaysia) Berhad, in line with the group’s overall strategy to utilise the globally recognised brand under the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (“MUFG”).
MUFG Bank (Malaysia) Berhad commenced its Islamic banking operations since 2008. The Islamic banking business currently comprised significant contribution to its Malaysian business with increased capabilities covering Islamic business for its global clients. The operations have been expanded to cover the International Currency Business Unit (ICBU) and Islamic Banking Window (IBW) with wide range of corporate offerings to its local and global clients.
Area of Services
Islamic finance solutions covering wholesale and corporate banking products and services. Products and services include Islamic corporate financing, project financing, syndication solutions, Islamic derivatives, Islamic derivative-embedded solutions, Islamic trade finance, Islamic corporate deposits and money markets as well as Shariah advisory services for capital markets solutions.
