PT Bank Muamalat Indonesia Tbk (“Bank Muamalat Indonesia,” “BMI,” “Bank”) is the first in Indonesia that operates with the sharia banking concept. BMI was founded on the idea of the Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI), the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals (ICMI), and Muslim entrepreneurs in Indonesia, which subsequently received the support of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia.

As part of its continued growth and institutional strengthening, the Bank later underwent a major shareholder transition, whereby the Hajj Financial Management Agency (BPKH) became the Controlling Shareholder through a capital injection and the acquisition of shares from previous shareholders. This strategic change reinforced BMI’s capital structure, supported its transformation agenda, and aligned with BPKH’s mandate to manage Hajj funds safely, productively, and in accordance with sharia principles, marking a new phase in the Bank’s development and its contribution to Indonesia’s sharia financial ecosystem.

In 2009, the Bank received the permit to open a branch office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and became the first bank in Indonesia—and the only one—to realize business expansion in Malaysia. To date, BMI has 234 service offices, including one branch office in Malaysia. The Bank’s operations are also supported by 564 Muamalat ATM units, approximately 90,000 ATM Prima networks, approximately 77,000 ATM Bersama networks, and 55 units of Mobile Cash Vehicle.
