A recent news report alleging fake RM5 Polymer banknotes in circulation is highly misleading. Investigations by Bank Negara Malaysia has revealed that the banknote is genuine. The faded prints were caused by chemical reaction.

Members of the public should take note of the many security features on the RM5 polymer banknote which includes:

• the clear window with the shadow image of the Prime Minister's Office at Putrajaya;
• the embossed printing of the numeral "5", both of which are visible from either side of the banknote;
• the intaglio printing of a multi layered special ink on the portrait of the first Seri Paduka Baginda Yang DiPertuan Agong; and
• the see through feature in stylised hibiscus which are perfectly registered on the front and back of the banknotes when held against the light.

These security features reduce the potential risk of counterfeit. Members of the public should therefore continue to use the RM5 Polymer banknotes with confidence.
