Kuala Lumpur is proud to host a high level regional statistics conference where leading policy makers, statisticians and industry players will share their knowledge and insights on how statistical science can contribute to innovation and better decision making.

The ISI Regional Statistics Conference (ISI-RSC 2014), themed “Statistical Science for a Better Tomorrow”, is jointly organised by the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and its South East Asia Regional Network; Bank Negara Malaysia; Department of Statistics, Malaysia; and the Malaysia Institute of Statistics. The conference will be held in Sasana Kijang, Kuala Lumpur from 16 to 19 November 2014.

The conference brings together more than 500 statisticians and practitioners from all fields, including central bankers, government officials, academicians and industry experts. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss and deliberate on the application of statistical science for policy formulation and decision making. The conference programme comprises 60 discussion sessions with over 200 papers to be presented. The topics will cover statistical theory and methodology, application of statistics in economics, finance and banking, official statistics and data management, and statistical computing.

Distinguished regional and international speakers will share their insights and discuss on recent developments in the field of statistical science. Key speakers include:

• Andrew Sheng, a Distinguished Fellow of Fung Global Institute, named by TIME magazine in 2013 as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He will share a statistical framework on national balance sheet and its importance to researchers and policymakers in analysing and assessing an economy, its sectoral interconnections and relationships that would be helpful for policy formulation and macroprudential management;
• Agus Sudjianto, Managing Director, Head of Corporate Model Risk of Wells Fargo Bank, USA. He will discuss on statistical issues and research challenges in risk management in banking and finance; and
• Pedro Luis do Nascimento Silva, Professor at the Institute for Geography and Statistics, Brazil and President-elect of the ISI. His presentation will focus on data quality and emerging challenges in survey methods.

There will also be a pre-conference seminar on 15 November, by the Irving Fisher Committee on Central Bank Statistics of the Bank for International Settlements, entitled "Is The Household Sector in Asia Overleveraged: What do the Data Say?". In addition, two short courses, "Introduction to Designing Surveys for Policy Evaluation" and “Data Mining and Predictive Analytics” will be held on 15 and 20 November respectively.
